Conducted by Tabrez Y. Ebrahim on December 13 and 17, 2023, the workshop on Patent Law and Islamic Intellectual Property offered a comprehensive overview of Intellectual Property (IP) with a focus on the U.S. Patent System and an alternative perspective termed “Islamic I.P.” Attendees were introduced to key concepts such as patentability and ethical limitations, engaging in inventive exercises to explore these themes. A notable highlight was the comparison between Western theories of IP and the Islamic perspective, emphasizing the importance of balance between private property rights and fair distribution. Through thought-provoking discussions, participants gained insights into the ethical considerations shaping patent law and proposed next steps to foster a more equitable IP framework. The workshop underscored the importance of cultural and ethical perspectives in achieving a balanced approach to intellectual property rights. For further inquiries, contact Tabrez Y.
