A Workshop on the ethics of scientific research was held at JUST/Nursing

On Thursday, 25/4/2019, the Faculty of Nursing at Jordan University of Science and Technology organized a workshop entitled “Ethics of Scientific Research” in collaboration with the Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) program at University of California San Diego (UCSD) and Jordan University of Science and Technology (JUST).

The workshop dealt with several topics facing researchers within the nursing fields including ethics of research on human subjects, medical data bases, research misconduct, and Global health. The presenters in the workshop were the RCR program fellow/instructors.

 

The Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) program held a new workshops at JUST, Jordan

The Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) program (a joint program between the University of California San Diego and Jordan University of Science and Technology; JUST) provided a one-day face-to-face workshop in Research Misconduct in collaboration with the Faculty of Graduate Studies at JUST. The workshop was conducted on April 22nd at Salah Al-Deen hall at JUST.

The workshop was presented by Dr. Nour Al-Sawalha, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Pharmacy and fellow at RCR program. The workshop aimed at deepening understanding of research misconduct and questionable research practices, including; types, causes, consequences, handling and reporting, real cases and possible preventative remedies. Further, the workshop assisted the graduate students to become familiar with the consequences of research misconduct and real examples of cases in the scientific community. In addition, proper research practices were addressed to avoid research misconduct and questionable research practices.  The participants appreciated the provided information and they requested to conduct such useful workshops more frequently.

At the end of the workshop, Prof. Karem Alzoubi (The director of the RCR program in Jordan, and the Dean of Faculty of Pharmacy) distributed the certificates to the participants.

Graduation Ceremony of the Third Class of Fellows from the Responsible Conduct of Research Program

Under the Patronage of the His Excellency Professor Saeb Khraisat, the President of Jordan University of Science and Technology, the graduation of the third class of the fellowship degree in responsible conduct of research was celebrated Tuesday, 09-04-2019 at JUST campus.  The celebration was attended by Prof. Karem Alzoubi, Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy and Director of the program responsible conduct of research at JUST, as a representative of JUST president, and Prof. Wael Al-dlaimy, the Director of the program, University of California at San Diego, USA.

This program is joint program between Jordan University of Science and Technology and the University of California at san Diego/USA, and it is funded by the National Institute of Health /USA. JUST is considered the focal point for this program in Jordan and the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). The fellowship training is focused on the philosophy and principles of research ethics pertaining to epidemiological studies, clinical trials, studies in laboratory animals, cell lines, biological samples and biotechnology.

Prof. Wael Al-dlaimy, said that the Fellowship Program in Responsible conduct of research is an international collaboration aimed at building capacities among young scientists in Jordan and the MENA in scientific research ethics and related policies. This is expected to prepare them to conduct scientific research consistent with global standards and to be future leaders who formulate policies of responsible conduct of research in their institutions and countries.

Prof. Karem Alzoubi, indicated that the graduates of this program are faculty members, lecturers and master degree holders representing various Jordanian universities and Arab countries such as Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, Sudan, Iraq, Egypt, Yemen and Palestine.

The ceremony was attended by several of faculty members, program fellows, and postgraduate students.

The Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) program (a joint program between the University of California San Diego and Jordan University of Science and Technology; JUST) provided a one-day face-to-face workshops in Research Misconduct in collaboration with the Faculty of Graduate Studies and The Deanship of Research at JUST. The workshops were conducted on June 25th and July 8th at the academic development center at JUST.

The workshops were presented by Dr. Nour Al-Sawalha, Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Pharmacy and current fellow at RCR program. The workshops aimed at deepening understanding of research misconduct and questionable research practices, including; types, causes, consequences, handling and reporting, real cases and possible preventative remedies. Further, the workshops assisted the graduate students to become familiar with the consequences of research misconduct and real examples of cases in the scientific community. In addition, proper research practices were addressed to avoid research misconduct and questionable research practices.  A total of 55 graduate students, including master students and residents participated in these workshops. The participants appreciated the provided information and they requested to conduct such useful workshops more frequently.

At the end of the workshops, Prof. Karem Alzoubi (The director of the RCR program in Jordan, and the Dean of faculty of Pharmacy) distributed the certificates to the participants.

The Responsible Conduct of Research Program in Collaboration with JUST/graduate Studies College Held a Workshop in Manuscript Writing and Research Integrity

file7As part of the continuing efforts to provide scientific support to graduate students at Jordan and the MENA, the Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) program  in collaboration with the Faculty of Graduate Studies at Jordan University of Science and Technology (JUST) held a one-day work shop about Manuscript Writing and Research Integrity. The workshop was conducted on December, 24 at Salah Al-Deen auditorium.

The Workshop was presented by Dr.Fadia Mayyas, a fellow at the RCR program and Vice Dean of Faculty of Graduate Studies at JUST. The goal of this workshop was to provide graduate students at our university with essential skills and principles in manuscript writing process, in addition to important ethical aspects of writing and publication, and the pitfalls associated with them. Dr. Mayyas provided a step wise guide to write a manuscript with strong interactive focus with participants. The workshop was attended by 70 current graduate students from different faculties including master students and residents.

The director of the RCR program in Jordan, Prof. Karem Alzoubi said that the workshop is supported by the RCR program that aims to train and mentor future educators and researchers in Jordan to enhance the research environment in Jordan and the Arab region. Dr. Fadia Mayyas added that these workshops are fundamental to increase our graduate students’ knowledge and skills of development of a research paper and prepare them for a successful career in research.

At the end of the workshop Prof. Karem Alzoubi distributed the certificates to the attendee.

The 3rd International Conference on Ethics in Jordan: Publication and Authorship

For the third year in a row the RCR Program in collaboration with the school of Pharmacy at JUST ( Jordan University of Science and Technology) and under the auspices of Prof. Sa’eb A. Khresat ​, the President of JUST ; held the 3rd International Conference on Research Ethics in Jordan under the theme publications and authorship. The conference highlighted ethical principles pertaining to the publication process, international authorship criteria and how these principles can be applied in the MENA region. The event included several international speakers and a wide-range of international attendees from all over the MENA region.The conference was held on July 3rd of 2018.

Professor Karem Alzoubi, the Program Director in Jordan and the MENA and the Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy, indicated that this conference is part of the efforts of the Faculty of Pharmacy and the Responsible Conduct of Research program to provide distinguished education and scientific research. He presented a talk on “Plagiarism: Detection and action the Jordan case”.

One of the important presentations was given by one of our lead faculty members Dr. Kenneth Goodman in which he focused on Ethics, Science and Authorship: The Growth of Knowledge in the 21st Century.

We also had a number of our graduate fellows who volunteered to present short presentations on ethics reflecting on their practicums or areas of expertise as follows:
